Marrakech – Ounila Valley – N’Kob – Zagora Oasis – Tata – Taroudant – Agadir – Essaouira – Marrakech

The Kingdom of Morocco on the northwestern edge of Africa is perfect for a Belvelo trip.

Yes, the topography is demanding as you approach the Atlas, and the Sahara winds can whistle in your ears. But despite this, the opportunity to experience the full diversity of the country between the Atlantic Ocean, the Atlas Mountains, and the Sahara by e-bike is unique. To say nothing of the culinary delights.

What our happy

We had an exceptionally wonderful team that took excellent care of us at all times and gave us deep insights into the people, traditions, and culture of the country. This made the trip a truly special experience. The diverse landscapes we traveled through by car and bike were spectacular and impressive. I really enjoyed the variety of landscapes we had the opportunity to see and experience.

Itinerary of Your e-bike Marokko journey

Day 1: Welcome dinner in Marrakech

Our hotel in the old town of Marrakech, the Riad Bahia Salam, is like a dream from 1001 Nights! Palm-lined courtyards, oriental artworks, warm colors, and a rooftop terrace to dream on. Here, I can arrive in peace and prepare for the upcoming journey. At the welcome dinner, I meet my fellow travelers—only 13 in total. A really nice group. The excitement is growing. (D)

Day 1: Welcome dinner in Marrakech

Day 2: Spectacular bike tour in the Atlas Mountains

With two modern minibuses, carrying the e-bikes on the roof, we travel from the city of Marrakech up into the Atlas Mountains. We drive over the spectacular Tichka Pass at an altitude of 2,268 meters towards Telouet. Suddenly, it appears like a mirage in the middle of Morocco: the ruins of Telouet Castle. I didn't expect such oriental splendor. After a brief orientation and getting my saddle adjusted, I sit comfortably on my e-bike. This is so easy: with five gears, I can decide at will when and how much assistance I need while cycling. The cycling route through the Ounila Valley, constantly surprising with kasbahs and palm trees, couldn’t be more picturesque. The small road is paved, yet there’s no sign of traffic. Have I really already cycled 40 km today? Unbelievable. Our hotel, Ksar Ighnda, tops everything—it's a meticulously renovated palace with great attention to detail. (B, L, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 25 mi (40 km)

Day 3 Valley of Palm Trees · Hollywood’s favorite: Aït-Ben-Haddou

A highlight right in the morning: the world-famous Aït-Ben-Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Massive city gates, behind them vibrant yellow houses and alleys reaching up to the sky. No wonder Aït-Ben-Haddou has served as a film set for countless productions like "Gladiator," "Kundun," "Lawrence of Arabia," and "Game of Thrones." From here, the journey continues through the dramatic landscape of the Djebel Saghro. After a few serpentine curves, we reach the legendary Draa Valley, a dark green sea of date palms, the lifeblood of the entire region. If that’s not a reason to saddle up the e-bikes for the track! I am in awe. Our 45 km bike ride ends in Nekob. Here, we find the inviting Kasbah Hotel Ait Omar—a small gem with the charm of a real kasbah. The German owners, who have lovingly renovated the property with great attention to detail, tell entertaining and insightful stories about their life in Morocco. (B, L, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 28 mi (45 km)

Day 4 From the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara

Today, we slowly leave the Djebel Saghro behind. Along the way, we encounter very few people, but the landscapes along our path are even more spectacular. The various shades of red are incredible! We can feel that we are getting closer to the Sahara, as the landscape flattens and changes dramatically. In a few small oases, we can watch the Berbers at work. The children are shy but still wave at us very kindly. After approximately 35 km of our e-bike tour, we switch to the bus in Tazzarine and head towards the Zagora Oasis, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Here, we change our mode of transport and ride camels to our accommodation for the night: Tizi Deluxe Camp. A true highlight of this Morocco tour: our shared dinner around the campfire. (B, L, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 25 mi (40 km)

Day 5 Camel tour in the Sahara Desert

Our day starts with a bike stage through the semi-desert, with the dark tents of the Bedouins in the background, who have lived unchanged in this vast, barren landscape for centuries. It’s quite hot. Thank goodness water, sunscreen, and a hat are always within reach in the saddlebag. I probably won’t manage the full 45 km today—halfway through, it gets a bit too warm for me in the middle of the desert. No problem—our air-conditioned support vehicle simply picks me up! After a short transfer, we enjoy a traditional lunch in Foum Zguid—a desert town straight out of a western, and a lively meeting point for nomads and villagers from the oases. In the afternoon, the support bus takes us to Tata, where we spend the night in a small, lovingly decorated guesthouse in the heart of the village. (B, L, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 28 mi (45 km)

Day 6 Garden of Eden in the Anti-Atlas

Today, we leave this peaceful place and travel 110 km to the Anti-Atlas, where the bike stage begins. Old Berber castles, mosques, and clay towers line our path. Almonds, olives, fruit orchards, and vineyards. Is this what the Garden of Eden looks like? For the last few kilometers of our tour, we travel in our support vehicles, as our destination for the day, the city of Taroudant, is a busy trading hub. Through the impressive 8-meter-high clay wall, we reach the charming boutique hotel Dar Zitoun. I am proud and surprised that, despite the climb over the Anti-Atlas, I managed the 42 km with ease. (B, M)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 30 mi (48 km)

Day 7 Paradise Valley and the Atlantic Ocean

This morning, I dive into the hustle and bustle of the Medina of Taroudant with my fellow travelers. Then, we depart with our support vehicles for the Mnizla Pass at the western end of the High Atlas (near Agadir). The High Atlas is the highest mountain range in the Atlas, extending westward to Agadir. Today, we’ll ride a total of 21 km uphill and downhill, but first, we head downhill through lush mountain landscapes and fragrant forests around the Sidi Abdel Moumen lake. Here, our guide surprises us with a lovely picnic spot. Where did all these Moroccan delicacies suddenly come from? A short bus transfer takes us just before Immouzzer des Ida-Outanane, where we saddle up again and cycle about 31 km through the spectacular Paradise Valley to Agadir. Since there’s hardly any traffic here, I enjoy the fabulous views of the ochre-colored mountains and dramatic gorges in peace. In the afternoon, a dip in the Atlantic Ocean rewards us—a true treat for both body and soul! Our hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the beach. (B, L, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 32 mi (52 km)

Day 8 Riding along the Atlantic coast

After a hearty breakfast, we board our support bus and head a bit north. Time and again, the Atlantic Ocean comes into view, its deep blue constantly captivating. Soon, we get back on our bikes and cycle about 29 km through argan tree groves and along the Atlantic coast. Again and again, I spot wide, deserted beaches below the quiet country road. For the final stretch along the coast, we take the minibus. Our destination for the day is Morocco’s most beautiful fishing town, Essaouira. Right by the Atlantic, a delicious fish menu awaits us. We spend the night in the magnificent Palais des Remparts, located directly in the Medina and not far from the Atlantic beach. (B, D)

Today’s cycling distance: approx. 18 mi (29 km)

Day 9 Atlantic beach and Arabian Nights feelings
